Part III - Vancouver Island Motorcycle Adventure

If week one was all about the thrill of new terrain, week two was about endurance—pushing through long days and navigating around wildfires. It’s funny how those challenging rides become the most unforgettable, isn’t it?

A Wet and Misty Start in Sooke

The ride from Victoria to Sooke started under a cold, damp mist that instantly took me back to the Lake District or Wales—grey skies, heavy air, and that relentless moisture that sneaks down your neck. Having lived in Alberta for 20 years now, it’s easy to forget how the damp can cling to you like that.

Still, there’s a unique charm to riding through mist-shrouded roads, the landscape revealing itself in layers as you go. Lunch at the Coastal Kitchen Cafe in Port Renfrew was just what I needed to warm up, and a quick stop at Botany Bay gave me time to stretch, breathe in the salty air, and capture some photos as the sun finally made its way through the clouds.

Time for a brew

After enduring scorching heat, wildfire-induced road closures, and customs control that felt like stepping into a Saudi Arabian furnace, the cool, overcast day was a welcome change. It set the stage for some atmospheric photography, and this shot from Sheringham Point Lighthouse perfectly captures the mood. The view beyond the trees was limited, but the scene had a cozy, “time for a brew” kind of vibe—quintessential tea weather, wouldn’t you say?

Take your time to get composition ready incase the weather improves.

Use your time

Conditions at Botany Bay weren’t ideal, even with a nice cup of tea and a good lunch to lift the spirits. But every location offers an opportunity for reconnaissance and practice. It’s a chance to work the area, explore potential angles, and plan for future shots. Treat it as a teachable moment: make notes, critique your images, and imagine how the light might transform the scene at a different time of day or year. Take a walk, explore, and see what else might catch your eye—you never know where the next great shot will come from.

And Wait

Watching the winds and the clouds, I had a feeling I might get lucky. Sure enough, 15-20 minutes later, the sun broke through, allowing me to capture this shot. It’s decent, but in all honesty, it’s a scene that deserves another attempt. Looks like I’ve got the perfect excuse to come back another time.
